This week Yahoo is unveiling a Digg-like news site, at http://buzz.yahoo.com/, allowing users to vote on online articles and thus guiding which ones get prominent placement on the homepage. You may already be familiar with similar crowd-sourcing sites, such as Digg and Reddit.

However, Yahoo Buzz is important for two key Yahoo! Buzzreasons.

1). Yahoo has scale – nearly 248 million existing users who can instantly try their hand at ranking and commenting on stories using their existing username and password.

2). More than 100 news sites — including USA Today and the Wall Street Journal — will place Yahoo “Buzz Up” buttons next to their articles, thus raising a story ranked #1 on Yahoo Buzz to an extremely high visibility level.

It’s only a matter of time until Tier 2 sites start including the Yahoo “Buzz Up” button to help elevate their content to play with the big boys and corporate brand start placing priority on “Top Stories.”

Will you Buzz Up?
